The Battle of Nantwich - Party Like It’s 1644

The smell of gunpowder. The clop of a horse’s hoof. The melodic beat of a marching band. The clash of a sword and roar of a musket.

If you call Nantwich home, then you will know the drill on the weekend of 27th January, when once again we will be commemorating the iconic Battle of Nantwich.

The popular annual event sees our quaint and often undisturbed cobblestone streets transformed into a tumultuous 17th century battlefield, where locals and history enthusiasts unite to witness a reenactment of the Holly Holy Day that took place in the heart of Nantwich during the First English Civil War.

Albeit a small battle, it would prove to have huge consequences for the future of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales as the Royalist siege of the town was broken by Parliamentarian troops under Thomas Fairfax.

But don’t let the history lesson scare you away. The day presents a wonderful opportunity for local businesses to come out in force, many of whom put on an array of activities for all ages, supported by a dedicated team of local volunteers.

From traditional children’s activities and tunes played by 17th century group Forlone Hope to food stalls dishing up some historical munchies, the annual event never fails to deliver an authentic deep dive into the era of our ancestors with a party-like feel.

A Glimpse into History

Aside from being a fantastic family day out to start the new year and another excuse to explore the vibrant market town pubs of Nantwich, it is a unique chance to time travel to 1644; a period when political tensions were at boiling point and England found itself plunged into the chaos of civil war.

The Royalists, staunch supporters of King Charles I, clashed with the Parliamentarians, advocating for parliamentary supremacy.

The day features the massed march down into the town centre, with drums sounding and colours flying, historical plays, pike and musket displays, a horse parade and a typically muddy Battle on the small grass park at Mill Island.

An authentic period camp will be set up once again, which allows visitors to interact with folks living their best 17th-century life! Trust us, you've never seen camping like this before – no glamping here, just the real deal!

And for those curious as to why everyone is fighting like it’s Game of Thrones, then the Sealed Knot have you covered. Educational talks and guided tours by knowledgeable historians will provide context to the events leading up to the Battle of Nantwich – all of which cater for the non-historians (cough, cough), and children, too.

Oh, and the name ‘Holly Holy Day’? - Locals rocking sprigs of holly in their hats when victorious, because why not add some flair to the battlefield fashion?

Mark your calendars, set your time-traveling apps – whatever you need to do! The Battle of Nantwich isn't just a reenactment, it's a full-blown party where past and present collide. So, gather your squad, your date, or even grab your grandma – you won't want to miss this epic blast from the past in Nantwich.

See you there!
